Pyrite with lower cubic symmetry from Lavrion, Greece

In this study, we examined the morphological, chemical, and structural details of tetrahedral pyrite crystals from Jean Baptiste mine in Lavrion, Greece. Pyrite occurs three generations. Tetrahedral first generation are left- or right-handed with lowest cubic 23 symmetry. generation, there twins higher m_3 hexagonal 6 All second primarily interpenetrated into a _4m3 Some, however, continue to twin up highest m_3m 6mm Third-generation overgrow second-generation non-oriented manner. Chemical analysis confirms chemically pure pyrite, single-crystal X-ray first- pyrite-specific m__3 The morphology single indicates that should have symmetry, which is not confirmed by analysis. This discrepancy may be due changed pT conditions consequent transformation original structure symmetry secondary suboptimal determining diffraction.
